The question

With the extra room kept, does early reaction (steering away sooner from closing neighbours) still win on the calm crossing? Is there a room size that cuts crossing losses enough without hurting the storm test?

What was tested

Early reaction with full room flew the crossing for four airframes at three speeds (36 runs). Then five room sizes, none to full, with early reaction, on the wing's crossing and both test sets (storms with a poor radio link, and a standard mixed set).

What was found then

With full room, early reaction halved losses or better in 9 of 12 crossing conditions and was never worse. But at higher speeds it lost 4–18× more than the no-room version. The sizes pulled opposite ways: at 22 m/s, crossing losses rose from 9 to 39 as the room grew, while storm collisions fell from 750 to 217 (old controller: 308). No size met both needs, and losses grew with speed at every size. A close-call yardstick that shrank with the room was found and fixed.

What changed

nothing in flight; close calls are now always measured against the old controller's bubble

Corrections retained in the record

  • Earlier wording: storm-link 308 to 358 collisions (unresolved, where full-bubble gave 217 and bubble-off 963)

Record correction: With the charge on, bubble-off gave 750 collisions. 963 was bubble-off without any charge, so the text mixed a charged dose curve with an uncharged control.
